Celebrating New Beginnings: A Family Photo Session at Columbia River Park

Writer's picture: Tasha LopezTasha Lopez

I recently had the pleasure of capturing a very special family photo session for my former manager, Sarah, and her fiancé, Mike. They recently purchased their first home together, and Sarah wanted some beautiful photos to hang up and celebrate this exciting new chapter in their lives—especially with Mike’s two boys in the mix.

Planning for Success

Before the session, Sarah expressed her concerns about getting the boys excited about professional photos. It’s always a challenge with kids, especially when they’re more comfortable in their athletic shorts or joggers. Sarah had a great idea to bring a change of clothes to help them feel more at ease and throw a football around to get everyone in a playful mood, which I thought was excellent!

Weathering the Storm

As we approached our session date, we faced a bit of a setback. The original location we had planned for was scrapped due to rain all afternoon before our session. However, we quickly pivoted and decided on Columbia River Park, where we could keep our feet on solid ground and enjoy the natural beauty the park has to offer.

To our delight, the sun decided to make an appearance just in time for our shoot, bathing us in beautiful, soft light. It turned out to be the perfect setting for the family photos.

A Surprise Engagement

One of the most heartwarming moments of the session was when I learned that Sarah had never had professional photos done before. Little did she know, just a week prior, Mike had secretly hired a photographer for their proposal! It was extra special to see her engagement ring making an appearance during our session. The joy on her face was truly priceless.

Capturing the Moment

During our session, everyone participated wonderfully. We managed to capture a range of candid and posed shots, highlighting the connections and personalities within the family. One technique I love to use during family sessions is breaking things down into smaller groupings. For instance, I took some time to photograph Mike with each of his boys, individual portraits of each child, and a few sweet moments just between Sarah and Mike.

You’re already dressed and looking good, so why not take advantage of the moment? It’s a perfect time for a new LinkedIn headshot or a special photo to share on Father’s Day, right?

The Final Result

In the end, we got a fantastic array of photos that truly reflect the love and excitement of this new family unit. The joy and laughter we shared at Columbia River Park will be memories they can cherish for years to come, beautifully displayed in their new home.

Capturing moments like these is what I love most about my work as a family photographer. Here’s to new beginnings and the beautiful journey of family life!
